Introducing the SEEN Safety System
An Operator’s Guide
If you are responsible for operating a vehicle that has been fitted with a Seen Safety IRIS 860 sensor, the following information may be useful to you.
How does the sensor work?
The IRIS 860 sensor uses infrared technology to detect reflective tape on high-visibility workwear, or on an object marked with reflective tape. The sensor has been mounted on your machine and configured in a way that best suits your operating environment. Watch our videos to learn more about how the SEEN Safety System works.
How can the SEEN sensor help you?
When the sensor registers someone or something marked with high-viz tape getting too close to your machine, it gives a loud audible alert to both you and the person that is detected.
It is an extremely effective way to minimise accidents and injury in your workplace, helping improve safety and efficiency while you work.
Key sensor settings
The sensor settings and the alert volume can be changed easily. If you think the settings need to be changed, please talk to your supervisor or manager.
Alert Volume. This alert is intentionally loud but can be reduced if necessary.
Detection distance. The sensor has a pre-set detection cut-off distance. On a forklift this is often set to 3m (9ft) or 4m (12ft). The distance should be adjusted to suit the working environment and machine type.
Reverse-only activation. To avoid irrelevant detections, sensors mounted on the rear of the vehicle are frequently pre-set so they can only alert when the vehicle is in reverse gear.

IRIS-i event recorder
The sensor may have an IRIS-i event recorder attached. Each time the sensor detects, the IRIS-i captures an image and short video of the event, along with data about the time, duration, and distance. This data gives managers valuable insight into how to reduce risk and make the workplace safer for everyone. The IRIS-i does not record audio, and the use of the data collected is covered by SEEN’s Privacy Policy, and the privacy policy of your own organisation.
Please contact your supervisor or manager if you have any questions or concerns.
